A lot of famous people of the past were snobs. Recently an artist friend of mine admited shamelesly that he is a snob. He said, Nabokov was snob, Picasso was snob, most of the known celebrities are too.

It gives you an aura of mystique… Being standoffish makes people wonder what’s going on underneath that crusty exterior and many want to find out. Others are just offended and walk away. The reason Picasso was a snob was in response to other snobs, by the way.

Classic Pottery Bookends From Famous Makers

Southeast Ohio was once the home of many famous pottery makers. Even today, names like Hull, McCoy and Robinson Ransbottom still echo through the Muskingum River Valley. Pottery bookends are among some of the most collectible pieces from these well known pottery makers.

The area around the Muskingum River Valley provided the perfect combination of natural resources that included a ready source of fine grade clay. Often found along the seams of coal that dotted the subterranean landscape, the clay gave birth to over fifty pottery manufacturers. The abundance of coal provided a great source of energy to fuel the kilns that were needed to fire the clay.

The fine quality of the clay found in and around towns like Zanesville, Crooksville and Roseville produced porcelain like quality. A combination of artistry and quality has made pottery from this area some of the most collectable in the country if not the world. Pottery bookends from southeast Ohio stand as a testament to the century of fine pottery making that continues today. Annual events are held to celebrate and commemorate the rich traditional of pottery making, drawing thousands of collectors and pottery enthusiasts.

Some pieces were created strictly for the sake of art while others, like bookends, had a functional purpose as well. In the early days of pottery making, form most definitely followed function. From bowls, pitchers and other useful pieces, scarce resources were not ordinarily expended on purely decorative pieces. This was especially true in ancient times. This is not to say that a flower vase or ewer could not be useful and decorative at the same time. During the heyday of pottery making in Ohio, decorative and commemorative pottery pieces gained in popularity.

Companies like McCoy and Hull are famous for vases and planters that doubled as bookends. How beautiful it was to have fresh cit flowers adorning the bookshelf. Many of the pottery bookends produced during the early to mid twentieth century closely followed the arts and craft movement and eventually the art deco form. McCoy pottery was also well known for producing many different themes that included various plant and leaf patterns. In addition to bookends and such, popular forms of McCoy and Hull included distinct fluted vases and deep color glazing patterns.

The lovely McCoy White Horse bookends were first produced during the nineteen forties. Porcelain white in shade, the figures depict two draft horses rearing up on their back legs. The colorful birddog bookends, also from McCoy, feature beautifully detailed depictions of hunting dogs having just retrieved some game birds.

The Roseville bush berry pattern is a very collectible bookend that, if found in perfect condition, can fetch hundreds of dollars. The Roseville Zephyr Lily bookend is a beautifully unique pattern and is highly prized among some collectors. This distinctive pattern features a yellow lily, shown on full bloom, placed in the middle of an open book. The Roseville magnolia blue is another highly prized and collectible set of pottery bookends. Set in a simple green L shape, the flowering magnolia is placed in the center with a subtle accent of sunburst surrounding the flower.

Most of the kilns that produced some of the worlds most recognizable pottery are cold, or have disappeared forever. The dozens of pottery and stoneware producers that once dotted the landscape of southeast Ohio have dwindled to a handful.

The internet has provided collectors from all over the world with the opportunity to gain an appreciation for these pieces of Americana. As with any collectible pottery bookend, the buyer must always be wary of fakes and knockoffs.

Pablo Picasso – One of the Worlds Most Famous Artists

“There is no abstract art. You must always start with something. Afterward you can remove all traces of reality”. These were the words spoken by child prodigy Pablo Picasso – a Spanish painter, sculptor, graphic artist and ceramist who is considered by many to be the 20th century’s best art genius. No other artist of the modern period achieved the range of influence which Picasso reached over twentieth century abstract art. Picasso is in all probability best known for the part he played in pioneering and developing Cubism. Picasso entered into marriage twice and was the father of four children, three of which were born outside wedlock.

Born in Malaga, Spain on October 25, 1881, Pablo Picasso was the son of a painter by the name of Don José Ruiz Blasco. His mother’s name was Doña Maria Picasso y Lopez. From a young age Picasso showed an exceptional talent for drawing. His father, realizing Picasso’s outstanding talent handed over his palette and brushes to him and swore to never again paint as long as he lived. In 1895 Picasso’s family moved to Barcelona. Picasso – aged 14 – took only one day to pass the entrance examination for the higher class at the Barcelona School of Fine Arts.

Picasso had his first exhibition in 1900 in Barcelona. That same year, he went to Paris – where he settled in 1904 – and his creativity flourished. The period from 1900 to 1904 was known as his ‘Blue Period’. This period of Picasso’s art is characterized by the utilization of different blue shades. These shades underlined the miserable lives of his subjects; he portrayed beggars, prostitutes and alcoholics. The suicide of Carlos Casagemas, Picasso’s friend; and Picasso’s trip to Spain were the stimuli for his Blue Period. His abstract art works during this period included a portrait of Cassagemas after his death, The Frugal Repast (1904) and Portrait of Soler.

The years 1905 and 1906 saw Picasso shifting from the dark Blue Period to a cheery Rose Period, featuring pink and orange colours and with circus-associated subjects. Most of Picasso’s abstract art paintings during the Rose Period were influenced by the affectionate relationship he had with Fernande Olivier. Following numerous variations and studies, Picasso came out with ‘Les demoiselles d’Avignon’, – his first Cubist work in 1907. African artefacts were the inspiration for this painting which critics considered to be only a copy of African ethnic art. In the following years Picasso along with his new artist friend Georges Braque explored the prospects of Cubism.

Picasso’s abstract art phase from 1908 to 1911 was an Analytic Cubism phase. He and Braque created landscape Cubist paintings using neutral colours and monochromatic browns. The Analytic Cubism phase was followed by the Synthetic Cubism phase which lasted up to 1919. Picasso produced his most celebrated art work ‘Guernica’ during his surrealist and neoclassical phase. For many, this large work done while the Spanish Civil War was in progress; was a depiction of the inhumanity, despair and violence of war. 

Picasso was one of the participants in a sculpture exhibition held in 1949, at the Philadelphia Museum of Art. His final works incorporated a variety of styles and were more expressive and colourful. Pablo Picasso passed away, aged 91, on the 8th of April, 1973 in Mougins, France.

Can anyone tell me of some famous artists or otherwise creative people who have suffered from a mental illness

I am trying to find out about famous artists or other creative people that have suffered from mental disorders. I have to do a presentation for my abnormal Psychology class, and I am not having very much luck. Thank you for your help, to anyone that can either list names or provide me with a website.
Well, it doesn’t have to be any particular mental disorder, just any at all. I am trying to disprove the myth the creative people are crazy.

I think it’s going to be a hard myth to debunk!

What Everyone Ought to Know about What Artists Are Saying

Are paintings and sculpture a bit of a puzzle that you cannot solve? Do some elements in artworks trigger an emotional response? Have you wondered how some artworks elicit a response and yet others do not move you at all? Have you wondered how artists connect you to human reality and to the natural world we are often separated from, living in our frenetic concrete jungles? In this short article I will point out some of the ways artists and writers connect us to our higher reality while also grounding us in the physical realm of the natural environment.

Well, here goes. I want to take you on an imaginary journey that can inspire and rejuvenate you, as well as connect you with nature and your personal values, which creates the safe environment in your home or workplace setting. 
So, what are the elements in a sculpture that connect you to nature and to other human beings? These elements include the sound of falling water, the rippled surface of a pond or bowl of water, a glimpse of smooth rock formations, the hint of human forms or marks, the presence of other living creatures – birds, frogs, fish, plants, perfumed flowers and fruits and so on – each of which titlate or sooth the senses and through these means make us feel we are included in some reality than the fractured daily lives we live in these very busy modern times. 
In a painting, these abstracted elements that signal elements of the natural world revive our spirits, contextualise and affirm our existence. Artists, those whose work lasts longer than a current fad, use long-standing cultural symbolic forms to portray and promote cultural values to those of us who form the society in which we live and work. I will use a well known example to illustrate how this functions – the connection between the artist’s painting and the viewer’s response to the work. 
Take the Mona Lisa by Leonardo Da Vinci as a case in point. What is it about this work that calls to the viewer and signals a response?

Painted during the Italian Renaissance in the early 15th century, La Gioconda marked a shift in the way the human subject is portrayed. The way the figure is posed and her expression, her clothing, the colours used to create this portrait, the background features represent key ideas of the newly evolving Neo-Platonic thinking which integrates and aligns Classical Platonic philosophy (taken from the Greek philosopher Plato’s books) with Christian ideals and values. This integration of Classical philosophy and Christian thinking became know as Humanism in later centuries. 
So, how does La Gioconda (Mona Lisa) demonstrate a Humanist demeanour? The portrait demonstrates a new humanism in the way the woman is modestly, demurely dressed, which contrast with medieval portraits that depict richly robed and lavishly bejewelled figures. The simple, submissive and demure way her hands are posed, clasped in her lap signals her acceptance of current norms of womanly behaviour as set out in Baldissare Castiglione’s book titled The Courtier. At the age of sixteen (1494), Castiglione studied at a humanist school in Milan. This Neo-Platonic education influenced his future writings through which he entered de’ Medici and Francesco Maria della Rovere courts and sphere of influence where he took part in Neoplatonic philosophical discussions in these hugely influential courts. When Pope Leo X was installed, Castiglione was sent to Rome as ambassador of the Duke of Urbino. In Rome he mixed with many artists and writers. Raphael became an intimate friend who sought out Castiglione’s ideas for his work. Raphael painted the famous portrait of Castiglione housed in the Louvre. This painting, like the Mona Lisa is a manifesto of Neo-Platonic thinking.
Raphael’s portrait of Castiglione, like Da Vinci’s the Mona Lisa, also gives the impression of a modestly dressed, demure courtier who is not ostentatious, pompous and overbearing in demeanour. His clothing comprises contrasting fabrics, harmonious colouring and consistently understated. His hands are also folded modestly on his lap. Both figures, La Giaconda and Castiglione gaze directly at the viewer, in this way showing their independent, strong and individual assertive nature. This strong gaze asserts their independence and ability to create and direct their own destiny. These ideas, too, are in extreme contrast with earlier medieval ideals in which the clergy controlled a person’s destiny and eventual gaining of salvation. Thus, the Renaissance Humanist model character is modest, intelligent, creative being, an independent individual – a new idea for humankind – who is capable of taking charge of their behaviour, family and civic duties and who actively gains salvation through their devoted contributions to the wellbeing of the family and to the wider community in which they reside. This is the ideal. Of course being human, many fell short and needed to perform good actions in order to gain deliverance.  
The famous smile on Mona Lisa’s lips hints at some inner revelation that she is having. The smile points to the subject’s inner tranquillity and peaceful devotion in keeping with the humanist ideal for human life. 
Da Vinci’s Mona Lisa is seated on a Classical terrace, much of which has been cropped form the canvas in the past. Behind this architectural portico, which itself makes the connection with Classical philosophical ideas popular at this time, is a landscape in which sit objects pointing to the creativity and intelligence of humankind; the viaduct or vaulted bridge that crosses the terrain and manmade winding carriageways. Positioned behind these foreground features is a distant rocky dessert landscape painted in cool hues. Dominating this distant scene is a large rocky mountain which represents the presence of God for the Neo-Platonist thinker. This symbol appears in many medieval and Renaissance paintings. The landscape and the figure on the terrace are harmonised through their colouration and their realistic, natural features, which connect the human subject to the natural world.
